Honorary Membership of the Northumbria Amateur Radio Club (NARC) was awarded to Gordon Emmerson, G8PNN at the club’s AGM on 1st February. Gordon is a very long standing member of the club since before the club purchased a redundant telephone exchange in 1969 as a club house. The club (GX4AXX) is located in the village of Ellington in Northumberland.
Gordon’s efforts to support the club have been ceaseless, including in particular his fundraising activities over recent times. We were unanimous in wanting Gordon’s contribution to be recognised in this way.
Stuart Wisher, G8CYW (remember optical communication?) who was re-elected club Chairman for this year gave his report at the AGM on a very good year for the club. Highlights of his report included successes at the foundation, intermediate and advanced licence exams. More classes are organised for this coming year also. Members of the club have donated a hex beam and installed it on our tower. Another club project involving the efforts of many members was the installation of a 40m full wave loop. A major development was the construction of a second radio room or shack which is almost complete now. This will leave shack one for HF operation and enable VHF/UHF operation in shack two, what a luxury! Our club premises also has a workshop, a members lounge/meeting room and a kitchen (from which the traditional pie and peas supper was served to all after the AGM), and other facilities. We also have enough outside space to erect the aerials mentioned earlier. Our idyllic situation has a nature reserve with a lake next door and the world famous Druridge Bay just down the road!
We meet every Thursday night from 7pm and membership is booming, prospective new members will be given a warm welcome, just turn up and make yourself known. If you are interested in radio, then we are interested in you.
